Our principal teacher at Embracing Shamanism is Twobirds Cunningham—a passionate advocate for the shamanic path, with a journey as inspiring as it is diverse. Originally from America, Twobirds found herself drawn to Europe, spending her formative years in Germany before embarking on a remarkable adventure.
After a successful career in acrobatics, Twobirds followed her heart to South Africa, where she spent nine years establishing a shelter for homeless street children in Johannesburg. Immersed in the vibrant culture of the region, she embraced a minimalist lifestyle, living in close communication with indigenous African tribes and discovering her deep connection to the shamanic path.
Her journey continued in Scotland, where she joined the Findhorn Community in 1996. Here, she found the language to articulate her African experiences and began to define her innate spiritual sensitivity. Since then, Twobirds has dedicated herself to intensive formal training in cross-cultural Shamanism, Shamanic Healing, Toltec Shamanism, Plant Spirit Medicine, and Native American Spirituality.
Her thirst for knowledge led her to immersive experiences in indigenous shamanic cultures across the globe, from Mexico to the Kalahari in Botswana, North Vietnam, and the Ecuadorian rainforest. This cross-fertilization of experiences has enriched her personal understanding and fueled her passion to share her insights with others.
Twobirds, alongside her husband Alastair, co-founded the Anam Cara Retreat Centre in Inverness, Scotland, in 2003. Here, they continue to live and work, nurturing an ever-expanding community of shamanic practitioners and providing a sacred space for spiritual growth and exploration.
